Simple, quick, effective assessment of drivers basic "day to day" skills and knowledge required by law and the company they are representing

Drivers are too often recruited without any form of validated assessment. Whilst they have the necessary “License” to drive the proposed vehicle, this does not verify their actual skills, knowledge and legal obligations involved in their day to day activities.

Due to ever changing regulations, transport companies have to protect themselves by knowing that the drivers they hire have the working knowledge and understanding of their legal requirements; not just that they can drive and have a license to do so; otherwise they may be putting their O license at risk!

Transport companies also have to be confident that they can trust the driver with their equipment, e.g. a 44 tonne artic carrying a full load (which could exceed £100,000 on the road). They need to be comfortable that this is being done legally and whilst carrying the reputation and legal responsibilities of the company. They need to know that this is being done SAFELY, SECURELY and LEGALLY.

The Approach

A different approach has been taken to the Transport Suite of assessments. The focus is more towards assessing the drivers basic “day to day” skills and knowledge required by law and the company they are representing and not a measure of the drivers CPC.

The suite is applicable to both the recruitment of new drivers and existing drivers and has been developed to cater for all employment scenarios such as:

  • Full time
  • Part time
  • Agency
  • Owner Drivers

The assessments are not designed to "Catch out" but to provide the business with practical, demonstrable assessment records of drivers' knowledge before "commitment to employment" or "hire" when recruiting and/or the identification of training needs and knowledge gaps thereafter.

We recognise that during the recruitment process for new drivers whether directly or through agencies, employers are exposed to unnecessary risks in a number of areas that could be easily mitigated.

In addition, we also appreciate that permanent and long term employed drivers develop gaps in their knowledge over time. Addressing this by regularly taking the assessments (e.g. annually) will ensure the key essentials are at the very least "front of mind" for every driver.

Risks

  • Driver’s load is not secure
  • Vehicle checks not conducted correctly
  • Working time directive non conformances
  • Legal requirements
  • Tachograph requirements
  • Carriage of hazardous goods conformance

Benefits

The qualifications of drivers are checked and valid. Their experience is clear from the drivers history but can they do the job, do they have the right level of knowledge and is the company being put at unnecessary risk and exposed to legal action?

The assessments will provide the company with clear evidence of awareness, compliance and record of:

  • Day to day driving knowledge and legal requirements
  • Awareness
  • Front of mind and knowledge reinforcement
  • Quality drivers employed by a quality company
  • Consistent measure across the company regardless of employment source
  • Identification of skills and knowledge gaps for training
